Gangadhar Meher is one of the rarest gems of Oriya literature. He used
to help his father by weaving the clothes but somewhere in the mean time
he learned to weave the words much beautifully than the clothes. Though
he has studied only up to 5th class, today a collage has been named to
his honor. The prakruti kavi breathe his last breath at the age of 62.

Biography of Gangadhar Meher
Gangadhar
was born on 9th August, 1862, at Barapali in Bargarh district. He
belongs to a weaver family. His father's name is Chaitanya Meher and
mother's name is Sevati Devi. He got married at the age of 10 to Shanta
Devi. After her death, he married to Champa Devi.
He is one of the rarest gems in Oriya literature. He was very fondly known as "Swabhab Kabi" and "Prakruti Kabi".
However, very few people knew that Gangadhar Meher's schooling career
was over when he was in standard five only! The strange is the ways of
life; a person who studied only up to 5th class, after 25 years of his
death, in Sambalpur a collage has been named in his honor. The Sambalpur
Collage was opened in 1944 but in 1949 it has been renamed as Gangadhar Meher Collage. He died in 4th April, 1924.
